The Salutogenic Paradigm

The salutogenic paradigm is an approach to health that focuses on promoting well-being and positive health rather than just treating illness. This approach is based on the idea that health is not just the absence of disease, but rather a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being.

The Citizenism Paradigm

The Citizenism Paradigm is based on the belief, stated in the Declaration of Independence 250 years ago, that all humans are created equal and are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, including the right to Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.

Introduction to Paradigms at the Institute for Salutogenesis

Shaping the Future Through Paradigmatic Transformation

Welcome to the paradigmatic heart of the Institute for Salutogenesis, where our guiding principle is the power of paradigms in orchestrating transformative changes. A paradigm, as we understand it, is a "governing conceptual framework" – an overarching viewpoint that shapes our approach to health, well-being, and societal development.

The Essence of Our Paradigm: Our paradigms offer more than just conceptual models or theoretical frameworks. They are the foundation upon which our theories, laws, and experiments are built. These paradigms not only guide our research and initiatives but also define the language and purpose shared by our community of stakeholders.

Impact Beyond Theory: The influence of our paradigms extends beyond the theoretical realm. They play a pivotal role in shaping educational curricula, structuring practice setups, and informing public policy and resource allocation. In essence, they set the boundaries of our "membership" – defining who our stakeholders are and how they contribute to our mission.

Paradigm Shift and System Change: Embracing Donella Meadows' insights on system change, we recognize the profound impact of a paradigm shift. Meadows, an expert in complex systems, asserted that the most effective intervention in a system occurs at the paradigm level. This belief is at the core of our approach, especially in our ambitious Democracy of Opportunity moonshot. We understand that real, lasting change in complex systems requires not just altering practices but transforming the underlying paradigms.

Navigating Paradigm Shifts: A paradigm shift is not just a change but a complete transformation – a process where an existing conceptual framework is replaced by a new consensus. At the Institute for Salutogenesis, we are committed to leading this transformative journey. We aim to not just adapt to new paradigms but to be at the forefront of creating them, thereby reshaping the landscape of health and well-being.

Join us as we explore and establish new paradigms, paving the way for a healthier, more equitable world. Together, we can redefine the boundaries of what's possible in health and societal well-being.

The salutogenic paradigm conceptualizes the individual within their complex life. It places the individual in the center of the complex ecosystem.

salutogenesis noun

an approach to human health that examines the factors contributing to the promotion and maintenance of physical and mental well-being rather than disease with particular emphasis on the coping mechanisms of individuals which help preserve health despite stressful conditions

  • How do individuals maintain well being and flourish in a life course that is full of stressful encounters?

  • What are the factors (capabilities) that contribute to health, well-being,  flourishing lives?

The Salutogenic Paradigm represents a fundamental shift in the approach to health and well-being. Rooted in the belief that health is more than just the absence of disease, it is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being. This paradigm places the individual at the center of a complex ecosystem, emphasizing the interaction between personal choices and the broader social and environmental context.

Central to this approach is the empowerment of individuals in their own health journey. It underscores the capability of people to maintain and enhance their health, supported by healthcare providers who facilitate and encourage this process. The paradigm acknowledges the significant role of social and environmental factors, such as poverty, inequality, and discrimination, in determining health outcomes.

One of the key aspects of the salutogenic paradigm is its focus on identifying early signs of vulnerability in both individuals and communities, thereby enabling the formulation of informed and effective interventions. This approach is holistic, addressing the medical needs of individuals while also tackling the socio-environmental determinants of health.

The salutogenic paradigm offers a comprehensive and empowering approach to healthcare, aiming to improve not only the management of chronic diseases but also the overall health and well-being of individuals. It is a shift towards a more proactive, preventive, and person-centered healthcare system, promoting a balanced and integrative perspective on health.
